Some of you may already know, but Friday is a very special day. It will be 75 years since VE Day, which stands for Victory in Europe Day. It celebrates the end of World War 2 in Europe and 6 years of war and fighting. On the first VE Day, on the 8th May 1945, there were huge crowds in London – and all over the UK – celebrating the end of war together. The Royal family and Winston Churchill (the Prime Minster) came onto the royal balcony at Buckingham Palace to wave to the happy, excited crowd.
Everyone was so relieved and happy that the fighting was over at last and all the brave soldiers, sailors and pilots could come home safe at last. Therefore, today's blog post is full of ideas to help you learn about VE Day and prepare your own celebrations for it on Friday.
You can read some useful VE Day facts from Twinkl here. There are plenty of other useful resources over on Twinkl too, but a lot of it is more suited to Key Stage 2 children.
Two more useful websites that are full of information are The School Run and The Imperial War Museum.
Here are today's blog activities to transport you back in time to the 1940s:
Find out more information about evacuees here.
Here are some more photos.
Here is a website all about toys and games during WW2. It is stuffed full of detail so don't attempt to read all of it in one go! I recommend adult Squirrels pick out a few bits to read together.
I hope you find learning about World War 2 interesting and have lots of fun preparing for the VE Day celebrations Squirrels! Let me know your favourite facts or what surprised you and send me pictures of your decorations.
Happy Wednesday,
Love from Miss Cartwright
